What You Need Before Starting

Make sure you have these items ready before setting up your thermal printer:

  • Thermal printer — Xprinter XP-460B, TSC TE244, Zebra GK420d, TVS LP46, or similar 4-inch model
  • USB cable — usually included in the printer box (USB-B to USB-A)
  • 4×4 inch direct thermal label roll — self-adhesive, no ribbon required
  • Windows 10/11 computer — with an available USB port
  • Cropped Flipkart label PDF — use EasyOrderLabel to crop your labels to 4×4 inch before printing

Quick Tip: If this is your first thermal printer, buy a pack of 2-3 label rolls along with the printer. You'll use the extra rolls for testing calibration. Most thermal printers come with a small sample roll, but it often contains only 50-100 labels.

Step 1: Unbox & Connect the Printer

1 Remove all packaging material — Take out the printer, USB cable, power adapter, and driver CD (if included). Remove any tape or packing foam from inside the printer, especially around the print head.
2 Load the label roll — Open the printer cover, place the label roll with the thermal-sensitive side facing the print head (usually the shiny/smoother side faces down toward the head). Pull a few labels through the front of the printer. Close the cover.
3 Connect power — Plug in the power adapter and turn on the printer. You should see a green LED indicator.
4 Connect USB — Plug the USB cable from the printer to your computer. Windows should detect the new device automatically.

Common Mistake: Loading the label roll upside-down is the #1 reason for blank prints. The thermal coating is on one side only. To test: scratch the label surface with your fingernail — the side that shows a dark mark when scratched is the thermal side, and it should face the print head (usually downward).

Step 2: Install the Printer Driver

Each printer brand requires its own driver. Windows sometimes installs a generic driver that works partially but doesn't support custom paper sizes. Always install the manufacturer's official driver for best results.

Printer Brand Driver Download Link Common Models
Xprinter xprinter.net → Support → Download XP-460B, XP-420B, XP-450B
TSC tscprinters.com → Downloads TE244, TE210, DA220
Zebra zebra.com → Support → Drivers GK420d, ZD220, ZD421
TVS tvs-e.in → Support → Downloads LP46, LP46 Lite

General Installation Steps (All Brands)

  1. Download the driver from the manufacturer's website (not from random third-party sites)
  2. Run the installer (.exe file) as Administrator
  3. Select your exact printer model during installation
  4. Choose USB as the connection type
  5. Complete the installation and restart your computer if prompted
  6. Verify: Go to Settings → Printers & Scanners — your printer should appear in the list

Step 3: Set Custom Paper Size (Critical Step)

This is the most important step. If your paper size is wrong, labels will print blank, cut off, or massively oversized. You need to create a custom 4×4 inch (100×100mm) paper size in Windows.

Method 1: Via Printing Preferences (Easier)

  1. Go to Settings → Printers & Scanners
  2. Click on your thermal printer → Manage → Printing Preferences
  3. Under Paper/Quality or Page Setup tab, look for Paper Size
  4. Select "User Defined" or "Custom"
  5. Set Width: 100mm, Height: 100mm
  6. Click OK/Apply and Save

Method 2: Via Server Properties (If Custom Not Available)

  1. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers
  2. Click on your thermal printer to select it
  3. In the top menu, click Print Server Properties
  4. Check "Create a new form"
  5. Name it: "Flipkart Label 4x4"
  6. Set Width: 10.00cm, Height: 10.00cm
  7. Click Save Form
  8. Go back to Printing Preferences and select this new form as the paper size

Pro Tip: Create a second form called "Flipkart Label 4x6" with dimensions 10.00cm × 15.00cm. This way you have both sizes ready to switch between without reconfiguring each time.

Step 4: Calibrate the Printer

Calibration tells the printer where each label starts and ends on the roll. Without calibration, the printer may feed too much or too little paper between labels.

Auto-Calibration (Most Printers)

  1. Turn OFF the printer
  2. Hold down the FEED button
  3. While holding FEED, turn the printer ON
  4. Keep holding FEED for 5-10 seconds until the printer starts feeding labels
  5. Release the FEED button — the printer will feed 3-5 labels to detect the gap between labels
  6. Once it stops, press FEED once more to confirm — it should advance exactly one label

Note: The exact calibration procedure varies by brand and model. Refer to your printer's manual for the specific button combination. For Xprinter XP-460B: hold FEED → power on → release after 10 seconds. For TSC TE244: hold PAUSE → power on → release after the beep.

Step 5: Print a Test Flipkart Label

  1. First, crop your Flipkart labels using EasyOrderLabel's free crop tool — this converts the A4 PDF to a 4×4 inch thermal-ready PDF
  2. Open the cropped PDF in Chrome, Edge, or Adobe Reader
  3. Press Ctrl + P to open print dialog
  4. Select your thermal printer
  5. Set paper size to your custom "Flipkart Label 4x4" or 100×100mm
  6. Set scaling to "Actual Size" — NOT "Fit to Page"
  7. Print just page 1 first as a test
  8. Check that the barcode is clear, text is readable, and the label isn't cut off
  9. If everything looks good, print the remaining pages

Brand-Specific Setup Tips

XPRINTER

Xprinter XP-460B / XP-420B Setup

The most popular budget thermal printer among Indian Flipkart sellers.

  • Driver: Download from xprinter.net → Support → select your model
  • Connection: USB (some models also support Bluetooth)
  • Default DPI: 203 DPI — perfect for shipping labels
  • Paper setting: In XPrinter Utility → Page Setup → set width 100mm, height 100mm
  • Speed setting: Set to 4-5 inches/sec for Flipkart labels (default is often too fast and reduces print quality)

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Blank Labels Coming Out

Causes: (1) Label roll loaded with thermal side facing away from the print head — flip the roll. (2) No driver installed — Windows may be using a generic driver that doesn't communicate with the printer correctly. (3) Print mode set to "Thermal Transfer" instead of "Direct Thermal" — change in printer properties.

Labels Feeding Non-Stop

Cause: Printer doesn't know where each label ends. Fix: Run calibration (Step 4 above). Also check that the gap sensor is not blocked by label adhesive residue — clean the sensor with isopropyl alcohol if needed.

Label Content is Tiny / Centered with Huge Margins

Cause: Paper size is set to A4 instead of 4×4. The printer tries to fit A4 content onto a 4-inch roll, shrinking everything. Fix: Set paper size to 100×100mm as described in Step 3.

Barcode Not Scanning After Printing

Cause: Print too light (darkness setting too low) or scaled incorrectly. Fix: Increase darkness/density to 10-12, and always print at "Actual Size" with pre-cropped PDFs. Also ensure the label roll is fresh — old thermal paper loses sensitivity and prints faintly.

Printer Not Detected by Computer

Cause: Faulty USB cable, wrong driver, or USB port issue. Fix: (1) Try a different USB cable. (2) Try a different USB port on your computer. (3) Uninstall the existing driver, restart, and reinstall the manufacturer's official driver.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Xprinter XP-460B (₹4,000-5,500) is the best budget option. TSC TE244 (₹8,000-10,000) is ideal for mid-volume sellers. Zebra GK420d (₹12,000-16,000) is the premium choice for 200+ orders/day. All three support 4×4 inch label rolls.

The most common cause is the label roll being loaded upside-down. The thermal-sensitive side must face the print head. Also check: (1) driver is installed correctly, (2) print mode is set to "Direct Thermal" not "Thermal Transfer", (3) the Flipkart PDF has been cropped to 4×4 size.

Most printers: turn off, hold FEED button, turn on while holding, release after 5-10 seconds. The printer will auto-detect the label gap. Xprinter: hold FEED + power on. TSC: hold PAUSE + power on. Zebra: use Zebra Setup Utilities software.

No. Use direct thermal label rolls (no ribbon needed). The printer applies heat directly to the thermal-coated paper. Thermal transfer ribbons are for industrial labels and are not needed for e-commerce shipping labels.

Yes! One thermal printer works for all platforms. Just crop each platform's labels to the correct size. EasyOrderLabel supports Flipkart, Meesho, and Amazon label formats — all cropped to the same 4×4 inch size.

Go to xprinter.net → Support → Download. Select your model (XP-460B etc.), download the Windows driver, run the installer as Administrator, select USB connection, and restart. Then set paper size to 100×100mm in Printing Preferences.
